
In 1972, the family, now with five children, returned to Little Rock and lived in the Robinwood neighborhood for the next 48 years. Norton and Jerry moved to Galveston, TX in 1964, where he spent the next 8 years completing his surgical and plastics residency/fellowship at the University of Galveston Medical Branch. Norton also served 8 years in the Army Medical Reserve out of Houston, TX and resigned with the rank of Major after he completed his surgical residency in Galveston, TX. Guy Theadore, who created his own hospital to serve the impoverished people of Pignon. This experience in Nigeria shaped his future interest in medical missions, where in later years, he performed corrective plastic surgeries in Pignon, Haiti with Dr.

WO Vaught of Immanuel Baptist Church, Little Rock vouched for Norton and he was later congratulated by letter from US Senator JW Fulbright. This award by the Association of American Medical Colleges was facilitated by the Southern Baptist Convention, sponsored by Smith Kline and French Pharmaceutical Companies. He spent several months at the Booneville Sanatorium in AR, where a portion of his lung was removed.ĭuring the summer of 1962 he traveled to Nigeria, Africa and served three months at the Ogbomosho Baptist Hospital on a medical preceptorship. Of note, Norton's junior undergraduate year was delayed due to contracting pulmonary tuberculosis while he was selling bibles door-to-door in the hills of NC the previous summer. They married in June 1960 and enjoyed 56 years of marriage until Jerry's passing in October 2016. Her parents, LC and Vera Carter were fond of Norton. Jerry finished her music degree at Baylor University, but they continued to stay in touch and penned many love letters.

While at OBU as a freshman he dated Jerry Lynn Carter of Stuttgart, AR. Graduating from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, AR as a science major led to his acceptance to UAMS in Little Rock, AR where he completed his medical degree. Norton lettered in football, basketball and track and was co-captain of his undefeated 9th grade football team with one of his best friends, Donny Nall. He was an excellent student, graduating with honors and gave the valedictorian speech at Camden High.

Marion Madison Norton, physician of the Sunnyside Plantation near Lake Village, AR and his maternal uncle, Allen Norton who was killed in action on the beaches of Saipan, Japan during WWII. Born on Mato Crawford and Isabel Pope, Norton was named after his maternal grandfather, Dr. He was the oldest of four children from Camden, Arkansas. Norton Allen Pope, MD, passed peacefully in Athens, AL on Decemwith family at his side.
